VPNs – Nord Vs Namecheap – Which one should you use?

Foreword

A Virtual Private Network creates an encrypted internet connection, while safeguarding your data and identity. Moreover, VPNs offer protection and add value in many situations, as seen in the post: Seven benefits of VPNs. In this article I discuss two VPN providers I’ve trialed, presenting an assessment of their features and performance.

Why I use VPNs

A VPN is essential for one of the remote employment projects I am involved in. The company is primarily located in Australia, yet I can work remotely by connecting a VPN. I frequently use Wi-Fi in Coffee Shops and Co-working spaces so using VPN secures privacy of connection. Additionally, I find VPNs fundamental in downloading files safely without limitations. I also use a VPN to unlock U.K. TV channels and streaming services that would otherwise be geo-blocked.

Analysing NordVPN

I enrolled on the 2-year plan which works out at approximately £2.60 per month. Certainly, I’ve found NordVPN a worthwhile investment with extensive, fast and efficient server options. They have a range of additional features which appear more advanced when compared with other VPNs I’ve used. However, some features like the ‘Invisibility on Local Area Networks’ and ‘Obfuscated servers‘ I am still to explore. Using NordVPN I’ve rarely experienced connection interruptions or website inaccessibility. Though with previous providers like Vypr and Express, I encountered such issues which restricted my productivity.

Nord VPN offers other services of value, namely:

  • NordPass – A secure Password Manager and Digital Vault (generate, store and organise your passwords). Currently I am experimenting with NordPass, taking advantage of a 7-day free trial for the Premium version.
  • NordLocker – File encryption software for desktop (encrypt and share your files confidentially).
  • NordVPN Teams – A VPN for business (access corporate data remotely and securely).

Analysing Namecheap VPN

Having previously subscribed to Express VPN, I activated the Namecheap VPN free month trial whilst in Thailand. Though at time of writing the Namecheap trial offering appears to have been reduced to 14 days. I found the VPN user friendly and economical, and was impressed by the city/region specific servers for countries I required. Furthermore, the Namecheap VPN was sufficient in combatting reduced bandwidth from file sharing and live streaming. However, I encountered restricted access to sites like BBC iPlayer and common disconnections. Subsequently, I researched further VPNs and discovered NordVPN, my present provider.

In addition, Namecheap are a Domain name registrar. I invested in a Namecheap Domain as a friend had recommended their service. To date Namecheap provide my Domain name jeffoblogs.com. Above all, Namecheap Domains are low cost with free Whois protection and private domain registration included. Note, all Namecheap banners in this article contain affiliate links. Should you purchase the VPN and/or Domain, I would receive a small commission at no added cost to you.

Verdict on Nord and Namecheap VPNs

NordVPN edges this battle of VPN providers. With greater server options and less interruptions to connectivity, I believe there is greater value. Certainly, my work role requires fast and reliable servers which the Nord service provides. Subsequently, I re-tested Namecheap VPN and found the connection speeds marginally slower than that of Nord. Similarly, I prefer the design of the NordVPN apps to the Namecheap equivalents. In addition, when comparing both User Interfaces, I consider Nord’s to be slicker. In regards to geo-blocks, I’ve experienced difficulties with Namecheap, especially in locations where data is highly censored. However, with Nord I’ve rarely encountered such difficulties. Dependent upon your personal requirements and preferences both providers add value and have similar features.
